The Golden Rule
Toys are typically lightweight but bulky, so air freight is charged by volumetric weight and can be very expensive. Sea freight is the first choice for 90% of toy importers.
Sea Freight: LCL or FCL?
- LCL (consolidated): ideal for under 15 cubic meters. You pay only for the space your cargo occupies.
- FCL (full container): a 20ft container holds 28 m³ and a 40ft holds 68 m³. The bigger the order, the dramatically lower the unit cost.
When Does Air Freight Make Sense?
For samples, small high-value orders, or when racing to meet a selling season (like holiday stock). Transit is 3–7 days versus 20–40 days by sea.
Tips to Cut Shipping Costs
- Ask the factory for compact packaging (uniform, stackable cartons).
- Consolidate multiple suppliers into one shipment.
- Avoid peak seasons (before Chinese New Year and Christmas) when rates spike.
