What product categories dominate Chenghai?
The district is strongest in mid-value, high-volume products rather than premium or highly technical ones:
- Vehicles — friction cars, pull-back cars, battery-operated vehicles, and remote-control cars across every price tier.
- Remote-control toys and hobby drones — a genuine area of concentrated expertise here.
- Water guns, beach toys and seasonal outdoor items.
- Building blocks and construction sets, and other precision-mould products.
- Infant and toddler toys — simple musical and educational items, walkers and activity centres.
- Dolls, playsets and soft-plastic figures.
Premium plush, wooden toys and complex consumer electronics are usually better made in other clusters such as Dongguan or Shenzhen. Knowing the district's boundaries is as valuable as knowing its strengths.
How are Chenghai factories typically sized and staffed?
The mental image of a vast Chinese mega-factory rarely fits here. Most Chenghai plants are small to mid-sized and family-owned, and many specialise in a single step of the process rather than building a whole toy. In practice that means:
- Your "factory" may buy moulds from a workshop, send parts to a neighbour for spraying, source the sound board from a third supplier, and only assemble and pack in-house.
- Capacity flexes up and down. A plant can absorb a big order through subcontracting — with quality that may vary between subcontractors.
- Mould ownership must be settled in writing at the start: who owns the tool, where it is stored, and who may run it.
- English on the shop floor is rare. Negotiation and daily follow-up happen in Chinese, often in the local dialect.

How do sampling and small runs work in Chenghai?
The real advantage of the district is that minimum order quantities are often lower than buyers expect, because the factories are small and depend on a wide customer base. That comes with conditions. Existing models can be run in modest quantities. Anything that needs a new mould carries tooling cost, which pushes the minimum sharply upward — the mould has to be paid for by volume. A sample of an existing model can be ready in days; a sample from a new tool takes weeks.
One point buyers routinely miss: the fair sample is not the production sample. Always ask for a pre-production sample made from the same tool, the same material and the same packaging that will actually ship, and keep a sealed reference sample to inspect against. Chenghai's flexibility cuts both ways — a factory that can change material easily can also change it without telling you.
How does cargo get from Chenghai to a port?
Chenghai is not a major container port. Goods are trucked to larger gateways — Shenzhen/Yantian, Guangzhou or Ningbo — depending on the shipping line and destination. A full container (FCL) is stuffed either at the factory or at a consolidation warehouse; any LCL shipment needs a warehouse that can receive goods from several factories and repack them. That inland leg adds a day or more and a trucking cost, which is exactly why combining several suppliers into one container changes the economics so decisively in your favour.
What is genuinely hard without a local presence?
- Verifying the factory. Many listed entities are trading offices, not workshops. A platform profile does not reveal the difference.
- Production control. Because work is spread across cooperating workshops, colour and material drift between batches.
- Pre-shipment inspection. A random AQL sample catches problems before the balance is paid, not after.
- Consolidation. This requires a real warehouse in China receiving goods under several supplier names.
- Compliance documents. EN 71, ASTM F963 or GSO/SASO paperwork must match the exact model number that ships.

Can I buy from Chenghai without travelling to China?
Yes, but somebody has to do the on-the-ground work for you: verifying that the supplier manufactures, approving a pre-production sample, and inspecting a random sample before shipment. Without that you are buying from photographs.
Are minimum order quantities low in Chenghai?
Generally lower than in the largest clusters, especially for existing models. Anything requiring a new mould raises the minimum substantially, because tooling cost has to be absorbed by volume.
What is the difference between Chenghai and Yiwu?
Chenghai is a manufacturing cluster — you buy from the factory. Yiwu is a vast wholesale market where you buy from traders carrying goods from many factories. Factories are better for customisation and volume; the market is better for a fast, wide assortment.
